A.T.L.A.S. was founded by Caroline M. Gundler, Ph.D. for the purpose of creating translational education accessible to any individual interested in advancing their anatomical knowledge. The idea came from conversations between her father, Mike Mueller, and his colleague, Jacob Hils, about the need for transparency in anatomical language between service workers and physicians. Dr. Gundler received her Ph.D. at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) in Clinical Anatomy which was focused on pedagogy and the anatomical sciences.
Dr. Gundler is a member of the American Association of Anatomists (AAA) and International Association of Medical Science Educators (IAMSE), in which these societies keep her anatomical and pedagogical resources current. She is currently an Assistant Professor of Medical Instruction at Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine (OU-HCOM) teaching gross anatomy, neuroanatomy, embryology, and microanatomy (histology). Her research focuses on cognitive integration of clinical and basic sciences; implementation of effective pedagogy into medical education; trauma based teaching; whole body donation; and humanization of donors.
